Evaluating Your Degree: Everything You Need To Know

Getting your university degree transcript evaluated is required by most institutions of higher education for admission and employers for skills evaluation. The reason for this is to verify you have demonstrated that your studies and experience are on par with the standard of education in the country in which you are applying for school or work.

Our partner American universities require that previous academic certificates are evaluated before admissions can be granted.

In this post, we will highlight the frequently asked questions about degree evaluation, with reference to our partner universities and all you need to know to get ready for your degree evaluation.

What Is Degree Evaluation?

Degree evaluations are a comprehensive, course-by-course analysis. The content of each course you have taken is looked at and compared to credits that can be earned in the foreign country of learning or employment. The degree evaluation also analyzes the grades you earned and compares them to what you would be assigned for similar coursework.

Who Can Evaluate Degrees?

Degree evaluation must be done by a credentialed service. Several associations have credentialed members who can undertake the evaluations. Before paying money for this service, you should understand if your prospective employer or school will accept an evaluation from any service or if you must choose a specific one. We always advise our candidates to use World Education Services, they are recognized globally and have services in the US and Canada.

Why Is It Important To Have Your Degree Evaluated?

Whether it’s for work, school, or immigration, many of these opportunities will require that you get your credentials evaluated. Let’s take a look at why this is important.

Study

Some schools will ask for your degree transcripts and undertake the equivalency evaluation themselves, but other institutions will require you to get a degree evaluation in the USA from an accredited agency. This is mostly a requirement if you are thinking of undergoing a postgraduate degree. American InterContinental University and Trident International University, require a show of degree equivalency before full admission is required for all postgraduate degrees.

Work

If you get a job in a foreign country, there is a chance that the Human Resources department of your potential employer will request for transcript evaluation; most times this is based on the role you are applying for. They will be able to guide you on what they expect for work and degree equivalencies. Like colleges, some companies will do the evaluations in-house, but for other employers, such as governments, you will be directed on where to get your international degree evaluated.

Practice as a Licensed Professional

Many professions are overseen by government standards bodies including licensing boards. Expectations about education and qualifications are determined by these boards. To be able to get professional licenses to practice as a professional in most countries, you will need to attest that you have the required technical skills. This is where evaluation comes in. Some licensing boards can carry out the evaluation themselves while others request that the evaluation is done by some other organization.

This is the official document issued by the institution you attended that shows you completed the degree program in the stipulated period.

Most evaluation bodies do not translate documents to a preferred language, you will need to also send translated copies to the evaluation body where required.  It can take time to gather transcript and up to a couple weeks to evaluate.  We highly recommend WES (above) for this service.
